Really enjoyed my time with Nonsense at Nightfall. It's writing is quirky and I liked that it took about 30 mins to play. Some of it gave me a Link's Awakening vibe. Hope to see more in the future either be a sequel, longer game or an episodic one.
I don't normally play games from itch.io, but this was a really fun little game. Part of this game's charm is definitely its randomness and reminiscence of old Nintendo styled games. I absolutely loved this game, and can't wait to see more from this developer! My only helpful critiques of this game would be, next time include a "Control" tab which will tell you how the controls are mapped, and for more text to be displayed at once. I really do recommend anyone who's scrolling through the comments here to give this game a chance!
Thanks a lot for playing and making a video! It was a lot of fun to watch :)
You're definitely right about that, I shouldn't expect people to read the controls on this page, haha. I'll sure keep that in mind for my next game ;) One thing I'm considering for the sequel is to go widescreen, maybe use the GBA's resolution (240x160) instead of Game Boy (160x144) so I have more room for text from left to right + 3 lines of text without covering too much of the gameplay. Thanks for the feedback!
Once again, really, thank you for checking out my video. I do like the 4:3 ratio, it helps a bit with the nostalgia feel, but if going to the 16:9 ratio will help get more text on the screen at a time, then definitely go with that. The game was really fun to play, can't wait to see what you come up with next! :-)
Walking around works with both the arrow keys, WASD and for people with an AZERTY keyboard (like mine), where A/Q, Z/W and more keys are swapped) that becomes ZQSD.
It was a really cool little game, it was welll written, i laughed because the game points out many little thing that come from games but are not in this one. There were also references that i got and it made me smile.
I've just one last thing to say, the game is good, i recommend it, it a great experience
The poll is in the video, so yeah, you should see it near the end, in the part with the mouse cheese temple thing. Also, both parts are out now, sorry about the audio quality after the phone call part.
Hello there, I recently played through Nonsense at Nightfall and I’d like to share some of my thoughts on it. Normally when I write these mini reviews, I tend to list the things I like, things I didn’t like and any bugs I may have found…but that’s going to be tough this time because 1) There’s nothing I didn’t like and 2) There were no bugs. So, I guess this will be me just praising the game then.
I’ve been playing indie games off itch.io for a long time now. After a while you begin to see a lot of repeat patterns, similar games, similar styles, and similar jokes, but this game impressed me. I found myself having a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoying it. First, the retro styling is very welcoming and looks excellent. I liked that the player has the option of switching up the colours in the menu as well as the ability to increase the screen size while maintaining image quality. The story, while being weird and absolutely bizarre, is one of intrigue for me, I was constantly trying to guess what absurd thing was going to occur next and loved every minute of it. Not to mention the abundance of references scattered about, I’m fairly certain I could only pinpoint a small portion of them, so I can’t even say how many are included.
I thought the puzzles in the game were of a decent difficulty, I know this might be a point of contention for some people, but the game does a good job of delivering the player the necessary clues to solve the puzzles, it’s up to the player to look around the environment for these clues.
At the end of the day, I got more enjoyment out of this 30-minute experience than I have with a lot of full priced games, it’s charming, it’s funny, and most importantly it’s highly enjoyable. I offer up my full support and encouragement for any future projects you have in the works, and I really look forward to seeing what else you can do as a game developer!
Also, I hope you don’t mind but I made a let’s play of my time with the game over on my channel (linked above).
Thank you so much for playing, making a video and writing this super nice mini review!
It means a lot you enjoyed it so much that you don't have anything negative to say about it! I playtested it a million times to ensure there are no bugs and I'm glad to hear no one found any (yet).
I'm so happy you liked the game so much, even compared to so many others on itch.io and even AAA games! :O I'm thinking about making a devlog on here to list all the references as there sure are quite a few ;)
Thanks again for the nice words and support! I really enjoyed watching you play, you have a great voice and the commentary was hilarious!
A charming little game! Short and sweet. I really enjoyed the retro pixel art style and the funny dialogue. I do think the game could have had more depth in terms of the story. It seems that any type of explanation was thrown out the window because "it's a dream." But even the dream world could have its own type of "logic" in the way it functions. It would have been more fun to explore that kind of thing. I do understand that the game was done as a Ludum Dare submission and was just polished. I think it's a great little game with that taken into account! The fourth wall breaking was hilarious. 4/5 from me! Would be interested in a sequel! :D The narcissistic elevator needs to be taught a lesson! Hmph!
Also, I think the game should have an epilipsy trigger warning or something of the like because of the rapid movement during some parts.
As you said yourself, the game was kept simple as it was just a reworked version of a simple Ludum Dare game. If I decide on making the sequel I have in mind I'll sure put more work into those things. I'm glad you enjoyed it and liked the ending. The elevator might just make a comeback in the sequel!
I try not to update the game too much as then I'll feel like I can improve even more than is needed. I did add a warning on this page.
Hi, i just played the game and liked the simplicity in story and gameplay, as well as the Pokemon/Link Awakening style. Have you any plan to port this so it can be played on an actual gameboy? Or is the code too different to even be possible (i don't know a thing about software so my question is legitimate even if it sounds dumb).
Thanks a lot! I'm really happy you enjoyed and that you saw that Pokémon and Link's Awakening were big inspirations for the style!
The game is made in Unity so if I wanted it to run on a real Game Boy it would have to be completely rewritten... I'd rather put that time in making a "sequel" :)
Thanks you very much for the game, it was about 30 mins very entertaining. I liked the fact that everything happens in a relatively small place, being one who changes to open the way to new puzzles. Good job.
I would like the game to have a better explanation of the story and be longer, but despite everything is a very fun game with a pretty and cute visual, anyway congrats for the game and thanks for this fun minutes ---
Thanks a lot for playing and for giving feedback :) I don't know exactly how you want the story to be explained better, there is no real story, it's just all nonsense ^^' If I ever make a sequel it will definitely be longer :)
Thank you so much for playing and the nice comment! I already have ideas for a "sequel" and other games in the works so be sure to look forward to them :)
It's made with Unity so I can easily build a Mac version. The reason I haven't made one yet is because although I can make a Mac version on Windows, I can't test it and I really don't want to put an untested version online. I should be able to test it on a colleague's Macbook soon though.
I absolutely adored this game! It was so fun. Kind of took me a while with some of the puzzles but that’s definitely on me. I had such a good time. Made a little video about it! I can’t wait to see more of your work.
Such a fun game with simple and easy to solve puzzles! I am also glad my trashy computer was able to run this game xD. The text used in the game was very amusing! Hmm...but I wonder where the Magic Key went off to now... Anyways. Awesome game! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for playing and making a video! Glad you enjoyed the absurd dialog and puzzles. The Magickey went off to another game, you might just see him pop up again in the future ;)
lo jugué anoche, solo porque buscaba una forma de matar el tiempo hasta que me de sueño, el sin sentido de las cosas me recordó a los sueños de mi infancia, me encantó el juego, espero jugar la secuela algún día.
Had to use Google translate you understand what you said but thank you very much for playing! I'm happy you decided to play my game to kill some time and that you enjoyed it! I already have lots of ideas for a sequel so who knows ;)
This was a pretty fun game! I had some trouble trying to figure out some of the puzzles, specifically the bookshelf one, but other than that it was a pretty enjoyable game! I also really liked the Game Boy aesthetic.
Hey! I really loved your game! It was really interesting and pretty funny as well. I had some questions about how you made the game, specifically if you used a game engine or you did it on your own. Could you send me your email and we could chat?
Thanks a lot! Really glad you found it funny :) I would assume you saw the Unity splash screen when starting the game ;) On my user page here you have links to all my social media accounts, feel free to message me through one of those.
It's really charming! I love the art style and music (my fav is the space song). All situations are really fun to be in, and the humour is on point. I'm a fan of observing every little thing to see what the character says of it, and there's a lot of love put into that in this game.
SPOILERS AHEAD: I just wish I could've seen what's inside the elevator :(. Also, my only complaint-ish is that the bookshelf puzzle, since even if it's fair cuz it is different from the rest, it doesn't feel fair. I actually passed that part by accident.
END OF SPOILERS: It all feels made with care, and to me that's the most important part. Keep at it, dude.
Thank you so much for the nice feedback! It was the first time I made a whole soundtrack for a game so I'm really happy it turned out good in your opinion! I really enjoyed writing those interactions and I'll sure make it even better if I ever make a sequel.
Haha sorry for that :P Yeah the search for the code might be the most difficult part in the game. The painting that the control panel is behind is the hint (It's a painting of a man browsing a bookshelf) but the problem is that you get that hint before you know what the hint is for so it's kind of lost :X
I definitely put a lot of time into polishing the game and I'm so happy you think it shows!
Thanks a lot for making a lets play of my game! I'm really happy you enjoyed the game. I also enjoyed watching you play it and listen to your commentary! When I was a kid I always wished I could make my own games for the Game Boy and now I did in a way, haha :D
The idea behind using H as your confirmation key is so it works well when you want to use WASD or ZQSD as your D-pad. H and G are your A and B buttons then ;)

EDIT: I couldn't wait and actually watched at work!
It was a lot of fun to see you play it and I'm really glad you had fun too. Thanks a lot for playing!

Thank you SO much for the download donation!!! It really means a lot!
Good thing you mentioned "Fir3" or I wouldn't have known it was you :)

Link's Awakening is definitely one of my inspirations and all time favorite games!
Thanks for the reply, glad you liked it.
You got good taste in games.

I'll definitely experiment with it a bit and see what looks best! Thanks again for your feedback :)
What a fun game! I enjoyed it a lot! Good work!
Thanks a lot for playing, commenting and rating!
Excellent job. Great example of a fun puzzle game with all the boxes checked. Well done.
Thanks you so much for playing and the nice comment!
I saw this in Reddit somewhere, I'm glad it was actually a game.
EDIT: Pressing Enter or F does nothing in the game menu :(
Thanks for trying the game!
If you haven't figured it out yourself yet: H is the main interact key ;)
Yeah, that took a while to find, and Z and S for up and down is bizarre on a QWERTY keyboard. What layout are you working with?
The controls are explained on this page ;)
Walking around works with both the arrow keys, WASD and for people with an AZERTY keyboard (like mine), where A/Q, Z/W and more keys are swapped) that becomes ZQSD.

Great job Siegfried! You did an excellent job with this game :)
Thank you so much, my friend! 🤩
Thanks a lot for playing!
Isn't turning it off and on again the first thing you try to fix something? ;)
I'll watch the whole thing when all parts are online!
What poll are you talking about btw?
All fonts in the game are custom made by me :)
The poll is in the video, so yeah, you should see it near the end, in the part with the mouse cheese temple thing. Also, both parts are out now, sorry about the audio quality after the phone call part.
Found it! Didn't even know polls like that were possible on YouTube!
No problem about the sound :) Thanks again for playing!
I had fun playing your game,
please make a sequel
Thanks for playing! I most likely will make a "sequel" at some point :)
you're welcome. If you do please let me know I would love to play it

You're quite welcome, thank you for making such an awesome game worthy of the praise!
Also, thanks for checking out the video, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
You're so welcome too! I even shared your mini review in an Instagram story cause it was so nice!

I've always wanted to be pizza, this game helped me fulfil my dream.
You're absolutely welcome! ;P
Great game, I really enjoyed it. Short and sweet with some nice references in it.
Thanks a lot for playing! I'm glad you got the references ;)
looks kinda like undertails style. i have not played the came yet but probably will soon.
I'll take that as a compliment :) Hope you'll give it a try and enjoy it!

I liked a lot the easter eggs on that game
Thanks a lot! There sure are quite a lot Easter eggs/references in the game ;)
This game was so much fun and hilarious. Your art is so pretty!!
Looking forward to any future games you might make.
Thank you so much for playing and the nice comment! I already have ideas for a "sequel" and other games in the works so be sure to look forward to them :)
Awesome! Excited to see where you'll take it :)
This game is really cool! I honestly couldn't contain my laughter or excitement once the cheese run started. 10/10 would take pills again.
Haha, thanks a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed the silliness :D
Can this game be available for Mac sometime soon?
It's made with Unity so I can easily build a Mac version. The reason I haven't made one yet is because although I can make a Mac version on Windows, I can't test it and I really don't want to put an untested version online. I should be able to test it on a colleague's Macbook soon though.
Please do consider making a Mac or HTML 5 version. Love the work.
Thank YOU for playing! :D

PS. please make the elevator open to me
So glad you did, thanks a lot!
I'll sure think about making the sequel I have in mind and there might just be some reference to the elevator in it ;)

Thank you very much!
Yeah that one was definitely the most confusing, sorry for that ^^'
Everything was really nonsense...........
BUT its funny XD, fun, I enjoyed it!
P.S OPEN THE ELEVATORS PLS XD
Haha, glad you enjoyed the nonsense!
There is no elevator :O
Hey! I really loved your game! It was really interesting and pretty funny as well. I had some questions about how you made the game, specifically if you used a game engine or you did it on your own. Could you send me your email and we could chat?

I'm really happy you enjoyed the game. I also enjoyed watching you play it and listen to your commentary!
When I was a kid I always wished I could make my own games for the Game Boy and now I did in a way, haha :D
The idea behind using H as your confirmation key is so it works well when you want to use WASD or ZQSD as your D-pad. H and G are your A and B buttons then ;)
My YouTube video ^^
Suuuuch a nice and cute game!
Thanks a lot for playing my game, Nirta! :D
Thanks for this beautiful game! Very fun to play, as well. :)
Thank you very much for the nice comment! Really glad you had fun!
THIS GAME IS GENUINELY BRILLIANT :D Loved it..
Thanks a lot for playing!
The graphics are definitely inspired by the old Pokémon games and also a bit of Link's Awakening.
In the options you could set the screensize btw, and to explain the controls a bit better: The H and G keys are like your A and B buttons on a Game Boy, with the arrow keys/WASD/QZSD as your D-pad and Enter being the Start button.
Anyway, I really enjoyed watching you play my game, thanks again!
This is such a trip! There's so many twists and turns and it was amazing. I had so much fun playing this! Great job!
Thank you SO MUCH for doing a let's play of my game!!! I can't wait to get home and watch it!
I'm so happy you had fun and enjoyed the weirdness and randomness, haha!
EDIT:
I couldn't wait and actually watched at work! It was a lot of fun to see you play it and I'm really glad you had fun too. Thanks a lot for playing!
I absolutely loved this game! I booted it up to give it a try and I ended up playing the whole thing!
It was enjoyable and a charmingly weird experience! Great work!
Thank you so much for the nice feedback! I really appreciate it!
Glad you enjoyed the weirdness too, haha!
